Two Global Citizens

Google Trends

I recently heard of google trends and have since read some articles about it and how some are using it to study certain trends in countries. I’m bored so here goes:

1) The Irish are the world’s loneliest web users.
2) The U.S (Washington) is the most interested in terrorism while Bin laden seems to be taunting the entire United States.
3) Cairo takes the top spot for sex while New Delhi favors animal sex and child sex.
4) Canada is in the top 3 for drugs.
5) The U.S seems to be getting more and more religious, being the only country in the top 10 search for God (even L.A and San Diego!)…It’s surprising that it’s the same for atheism.
6) Gay’s first spot is Chile and lesbian’s first is Australia (among exclusively developed nations).
7) Latin American countries, most notably Venezuela are the most interested in Britney Spears.
8) Who would’ve thought that Indians would be worried about stress management?
9) Coca-cola is doing better internationally than Pepsi, even their google fight confirmed it (check out the Lebanon-Syria one).
10) I guess you have to go to Canada for peace, Buenos Aires for guns, Philadelphia for love (L.A is second) and Manila for euthanasia (that last one is not very surprising).
11) Gangs goes to….L.A!

….

This can go on for a while but since it only represents upper-middle class, literate and educated people in the developed world, then it’s not really representative of countries or populations. Also, it can’t be sensitive to cultural differences such as the usage of different terms for the same item (coke, coca-cola or simply cola) and doesn’t include different languages within the same search…among many other factors on why I just wasted 20 mins of my time.

  2. Exactly Simon! This does not mean or represent anything at all, it was mere abuse of the way it works.
